The Rights of Spring

Note: A lot of the actual performance depends on song, music, and dance, which depend on what you have for performing resources. This has a different plot from the 'Rites' in the patternbook, so mix and match.

Lady With the Hat:
And now it's Spring! In the Spring, as the name implies, events appear suddenly, leap up at us, as it were, as in the case of this story of the forest.

Forest:
Once upon a time, I caused a tree to be planted. I had it planted, I had it watered, and it grew into the tree of life.

Lady With the Hat:
Summer: In the Summer, a sudden rush of warmth to the head causes our thoughts to lightly fly into the air.

Summer:
In the Summer, my favorite, Amelia Earhart, was born.

Earhart parents are medium-sized
birds, Amelia is a baby dog,
medium-sized dog, flat dog in an airplane
and hand-puppet on a string to fly away.

Narrator:
Ladies and Gentlemen, Amelia was born to Mr. Bird and Mrs Bird, and she was born from this very egg- Quick! Hot water!....... And the egg grew into this baby.

Bird parents go behind Tree of Life
banner and emerge with baby
go behind again and appear with
full-grown Amelia

And it grew and grew into a lovely...... person, and here she is! Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Bird!
Amelia! Lovely! Charming! A fine dancer! But! Poor Amelia! Amelia Earhart could not fly. She tried, and she tried, and she tried, until she was in despair. Then, on December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers invented

airplane in, plays with Amelia

the airplane! She wanted it, she wanted it, she had to have it!
and she was united with her plane

flat Amelia on plane

and together they visited Asia, Africa, Europe and all the islands. And she flew up above all the birds.
and Amelia Earhart learned how to fly

And may we all learn how to fly as well as her.

Narrator:
Amelia Earhart, the greatly renowned
She set out to sail the world around
Air itself loved her. Air will ever surround
Her. She entered the air and was never found.

FALL

for City, see Mr. Punch,
for city landscape, see Urbanity parade

City:
Autumn in the City!
Pleasures everywhere
As passers-by
Watch pigeons fly
Through limpid city air

Happiness is easy
When you find your way
To urban parts
Where soaring hearts
Soon find themselves at play

Lady With the Hat:
Fall: In the Fall, we feel the urge to huddle together for warmth; the season's changing - let's head for the city!

City:
It's everybody's favorites: Romeo and Julet!

Romeo and Juliet are a dog and cat
for Romeo and Juliet see Hat Cat
Romeo and Juliet enter,
They do a double-take

Romeo:
But soft! What light through yonder window breaks
It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!
Juliet:
O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?

They circle, spar, drop and retrieve hankie
give and accept flower,
fall in love, and dance

Narrator:
And so they lived happily ever after!

WINTER

Ocean:
Ocean am I
The ever-changing
All round the world
Freely ranging

Lady With the Hat:
The approach of Winter brings privation, sorrow, even to the deathless sea.

Ocean:
My codfish, my cod, my dying cod!

for cod, see two-person fish

Cod:
Ballade de Cod
The sea, my deep blue forest full of friends
Who would have thought it could be scraped so clean
As clean as poolside tiles of neon green
Bare as Sahara sands where the world ends.

From the depths I cry to you, Oh God
With your great tail smite down my enemy
Lord, in your loving fins fold me
Come to the aid of me, your helpless cod

enter Ahab

Ahab:
Men, men, men!!!

goons in

Ahab and goons:
What do you do when you see a codfish, men?
Sing out for him!
And what do you do next, men?
Lower away, and after him!
And what tune is it ye pull to, men?
A dead codfish or a stove boat!

Goons chase cod

Ahab:
Aye, aye! And I'll chase him round Good Hope, and round the Horn, and round the Norway Maelstrom, and round perdition's flames before I give him up!

codfish, Ahab, and Goons out

Lady With the Hat:
And now Winter is here, and Winter rules the World!

Four Horsemen in

Narrator:
Come and see.
And I saw, and beheld, a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him; and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
Come and see.
And there went forth another horse that was red; and power was given that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another.
Come and see.
And I beheld, and lo, a black horse; and he that sat upon had a pair of balances in his hand. And I heard a voice say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
Come and see.
And I looked, and beheld, a pale horse; and his name that sat on him was Death.

Song

Lady With the Hat:
I object! Ladies and Gentlemen, there is no reason why we should put up with all this Death and destruction, greed and evil, for another minute. I Protest!
We want Spring!
We want Spring!
